First mentioned in the archives as far back as 1480, the Gummerhof originally stood
on its own to the north of the city of Bolzano, in the midst of a sea of vines.
In 1880, Josef Trafojer acquired the premises and built a new winery and spirit distillery alongside. |
Josef Trafojer Junior continued producing wine till 1925.
At that point production ceased, and was not resumed until the late 1940s, under the management of Josef's
son-in-law Rudolf Malojer. The entire plant was radically modernised, and the
cellarage was upgraded to conform to modern specifications. The carefully tended
oak vats were supplemented by large-capacity stainless steel containers, and
state-of-the-art winemaking technology was installed.
Before long, additional must was being bought in from independent growers,
enabling the varietal range to be extended. The Malojer-Gummerhof winery is
run today as a family business dedicated to the production of unfailingly
top-quality wines on the basis of many years of practical experience combined
with up-to-the-minute scientific knowledge of wine production. |
